ACS Oldham Hall's Student Council
Beginnings and its Purpose
The Student Council (SC) was conceived in 2005 with the first election held on 24 April 2005, listing the following as the roles played in ACS Oldham Hall (ACS OH):
Voice of the boarders;
Link between boarders and staff of ACS OH;
Responsible for encouraging interaction among boarders;
Provide feedback on boarders' living conditions;
Help to plan activities for boarders
Ultimately, it was hoped that through the Student Council, ACS OH would achieve:
A sense of Ownership of the boarding school by the boarders;
A realisation among the staff that boarders are vital and active stakeholders in ACS OH;
An avenue for the boarders to develop and exercise leadership;
A closer bond between boarders and staff as both parties develop a deeper understanding of the intricacies of boarding life;
A coherent structure of organising, mobilising and motivating the boarders
Composition of the Student Council
The number of Student Councilors is decided by the SC Advisors in consultation with the incumbent SC. Members of the SC are selected through a process of:
Nomination: Boarders are invited to nominate themselves or their peers at the beginning of the year, generally after the Orientation Games. The Asst House Masters/Mistresses (AHMs) are also asked to encourage boarders to put themselves forward for nomination.
Interviews/Selection: Nominees are interviewed by Advisors and selected members of the current or previous SC. Those who passed the interviews become candidates for the election and they can start their campaign. In general, most nominees will pass the interviews.
Election: After a period of campaigning, boarders and AHMs cast their votes for the people they decided to be members of the next SC. The nominees with the most number of votes will become members of the SC.
The President of the SC is chosen by the SC Advisors. The other positions will be filled by the rest of the members in the new SC by consensus among themselves.
Activities of the Student Council
Members of the SC also sit as key members in the Events Committee and the Welfare Board. They participate in the activities and deliberations of these two committees. The Student Councilors are involved in all activities planned by these two Committees.
They have also initiated their own activities over the years in:
Orientation for new boarders
Student Council Elections, Investitures and Camps
Recycling Campaigns
ACS OH Performance Festival
Jigsaw Puzzle Competition
Weeking movie screening
Sports Carnival
